It will be in Barcelona that I change my mind and decide to travel to Seville in January – in the new year – a new decade. There I will purchase a flight to Chicago to visit my daughter for Christmas.  Later I will appreciate my choice, but we do not know why yet…and I won’t know why the pull to travel to the icy Great Lakes was so strong.

At the hostel, there is an older woman from France. We are anomalies, so we agree to stick together and mingle with the young travellers in the basement kitchen where everyone will drink wine from tetra boxes and plastic water bottles. She too is traveling to Chicago to see her daughter. We think this is auspicious, so I agree to meet for brunch at Logan Square during the holidays and plan a visit to her village in the Pyrenees where we will plant kale in the community garden. We mark the last two weeks in February 2020 on our calendars. Set the date aside.

Use simple cups for wine.

Share boiled potatoes.

Rinse communal plates.
